INSIDER-OUTSIDER is an interactive musical experience in virtual reality inspired by the life of Henry Darger, an internationally renowned “outsider artist” whose work remained unknown until his death.
Co-produced by Lucid Realities and Science & Mélodie, the experience is part of a large transmedia project titled OUTSIDER, led by musician Philippe Cohen Solal (Gotan Project). This project combines music, animation, and artistic performances to reinterpret Henry Darger’s work.
The American artist created countless writings, paintings, and song lyrics while living in isolation in his Chicago room from the 1930s until his death in 1973. In stark contrast to today’s society—where everything is displayed and shared—Darger never revealed his work to anyone. Yet, his nearly esoteric vision of the world seems to resonate with today’s reality: heroines and child soldiers, sometimes hybrid beings, battle dark forces to save the world from the Apocalypse.
The INSIDER-OUTSIDER virtual reality experience extends the sensory, musical, and visual exploration of the OUTSIDER project. Participants are invited to explore a fantastical universe inspired by Darger’s illustrations, protect the children who inhabit it (the Vivian Girls), and bring harmony to the world by interacting with music and nature.
