Edvard Munch’s ‘The Sun’ paintings are forces of nature. They are wild, energetic, and overpowering in their brightness. Stand in front of them and you can feel the colorful rays coming towards you, the warmth on your skin. The paintings show the December sun over the harbor entrance of the Norwegian town of Kragerø, where Munch lived for a while.
THE SUN is a VR experience that reveals the story behind Edvard Munch’s iconic series of paintings, playing with what our eyes see and our brains make up. By his own admission, Munch developed a downright religious relationship to this light, which, within a few moments, manages to dispel the darkness of winter.
Munch loved the sun as an ancient symbol of life, but was also interested in the power of light. What does it do to our brain? Can we see beyond the physical boundaries of our eyes?
THE SUN is an unique visual exploration in VR, channeling Munch’s curiosity for science and spirituality. In the experience we experiment with the so-called Ganzfeld effect, and let the viewer reflect on their own personal relationship to light and darkness.
